Enrichment Activity for Reading Fluency Presented at Florida Reading Conference
Orlando, FL - (September 2, 2008) - Playbooks, Inc. is exhibiting at the Florida Reading Association Annual Conference in Orlando from September 4-7, 2008. The conference features expert educational speakers who will share effective methods of teaching, as well as exhibitors of valuable classroom materials. The unique Reader’s Theater company provides stories in a patented format that makes an excellent enrichment activity for building reading fluency. Implementing Reader’s Theater requires little preparation time and the program is easy for administrators and teachers to direct. Available at the Playbooks® Reader’s Theater Booth (booth #507 at the Shingle Creek Resort) will be free story samples showing the exclusive format.
Reader’s Theater stories are written like plays with dramatic character dialogue and the addition of a narrator. Students read the stories aloud in groups, bringing the characters to life by portraying specific assigned roles. No memorization, props, costumes or stage is required, but expressive voices and gestures enhance the experience. Reader’s Theater is growing in popularity across the nation because it is fun and interactive while also meeting academic core content standards. With “Repeated Guided Oral Reading” being the best proven method for building reading skills, students participating in Reader’s Theater programs are scoring better on standardized tests, showing higher fluency and developing greater comprehension skills.
Playbooks® Reader’s Theater stories are unique because character roles are written at differing reading levels, so readers of varying ability can read the story together, modeling both fluent reading and creative expression for one another. Each character part is shown in a different colored text to increase students’ ease in following their parts. Over 65 titles are available and include adapted classics, original tales, and themed sets in social studies and character development. Playbooks® Reader’s Theater story sets include copies of the story for each character part, a teacher handbook with lesson plans, award certificates for students, and cross-curricular supplemental activity packets.
